During the first appointment we will allow an extra 15 minutes, for which you will not be charged, for a consultation to take place. You will be asked a number of questions about your general health and past medical history, what you expect from the massage session, and to answer any questions you may have about massage in general or the treatment session itself.

You will then be asked to undress down to your underwear. Some forms of treatment do not require any clothes to removed, however it is advisable to wear loose comfortable clothing such as a t-shirt. Please be assured your privacy and dignity will be maintained at all times. You will be asked to remove any jewellery and glasses, although contact lenses do not always need to be removed, or difficult to remove body piercings.

The treatments vary: some are performed sitting upright on a low backed chair, others on a comfy body pillow, or a portable massage table.

All oils used are cold pressed and unrefined so that the oils properties are not depleted during its manufacture and will not interfere with weight loss. No nut oils are used.

During the massage session you may feel that there is a specific area that you do not want massaged or an area that you would like extra attention paid to. You may require a deeper or lighter pressure applied. In these circumstances your wishes are always taken into account.

Once the massage session is completed you will be asked to get dressed in our own time, you will then be given post treatment advice to help you get the best effects from your massage.

It is up to the individual how often they receive a massage treatment - someone may want a daily massage, whilst others may want one once a month or as a special treat.

"My massage was really lovely... very relaxing and my back pain was eliminated; I've booked one for next week!" Sarah Booker, Doctor and new mum

Following your massage treatment you may experience, over the next few days, some of the following symptoms:

• Cold-like symptoms
• Increased sweating
• Stuffy, blocked or runny nose
• Heightened emotions – high or low
• Sleepy & fatigued or deeply relaxed
• Irritable
• Energised
• Temporary worsening of symptoms
• Increased thirst
• Increased urination
• Sounder sleep

As everyone is different and may ‘react’ differently to a massage treatment, these symptoms are quite normal and are a good sign that the treatment is working. This is known as a healing reaction. You should do the following:

• Drink plenty of water over the 24 hours following treatment (this can assist your body to flush out toxins that massage helps to release from your body)
• If you feel tired, rest as much as possible
• Avoid heat treatments (bath, sauna, tanning bed etc) for at least 24 hours
• Avoid strenuous activity or exercise for the rest of the day after treatment or for at least 24 hours
• Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours
• If you feel concerned about anything following your treatment call Happy Massage for advice
